Yakama People
The Yakama (approximately 31,000 enrolled) inhabit the Cascade Range volcanic region near Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, and Mount St. Helens. They endure volcanic eruptions (witnessed catastrophic 1980 St. Helens eruption), earthquakes, lahars, and seismic hazards. Traditional salmon fishing, root gathering, horse culture, and spiritual connection to volcanic peaks define this Columbia Plateau people living in one of North America's most volcanically active and dangerous zones.
