Throat Singers of the Mountain Steppes

Tuvan People

The Tuvans (approximately 300,000) inhabit the Tuva Republic in south-central Siberia, surrounded by mountains with extreme continental climate (-50°C to +40°C). Famous for khöömei (throat singing), they maintain nomadic herding traditions, shamanism, and Buddhist practices. The harsh steppe and mountain environment shaped their unique culture balancing ancient traditions with modern pressures in one of Russia's most remote regions.
