Arctic Scandinavia's Indigenous Herders

Northern Sámi People

The Northern Sámi (largest Sámi group, approximately 25,000-30,000 speakers) inhabit Sápmi across northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland. They endure Arctic winters (-40°C), months of polar night, and harsh tundra. Traditional reindeer herding, joik singing, colorful gákti clothing, and Sámi language preservation characterize Europe's only indigenous Arctic people maintaining traditional livelihoods despite modern pressures and climate change.
