Mid-Atlantic Volcanic Islands

Azores-Madeira Islanders

Azorean and Madeiran islanders inhabit remote volcanic archipelagos in the mid-Atlantic facing earthquakes, volcanic activity, Atlantic storms, isolation (1,500 km from mainland Portugal), and hurricane-force winds. The Azores experience frequent seismic activity (1998 Faial earthquake, ongoing volcanic tremors). Steep volcanic terrain, terrace agriculture on cliff-sides, ocean-dependent economy, and survival on isolated volcanic peaks in the stormy Atlantic characterize these Portuguese island communities at the mercy of Earth's volcanic and oceanic forces.
