Karamojong People
The Karamojong (approximately 1 million) are Nilotic pastoralists inhabiting northeast Uganda's semi-arid Karamoja regionāone of Africa's most drought-prone areas. They endure severe recurring droughts, food insecurity, cattle raiding conflicts, extreme heat, and marginalization. Traditional cattle-centered economy, age-set systems, scarification, warrior culture, and resilience through repeated droughts and famines characterize their adaptation. Climate change intensifies droughts, threatening pastoral livelihoods in an already-harsh environment where cattle represent wealth, identity, and survival.
