Ethiopian Highlanders

Ethiopian highlanders (Amhara, Tigray, others—millions) inhabit the Ethiopian Highlands at 2,000-4,500 meters—Africa's highest major population center. They have evolved physiological adaptations to altitude and built ancient Christian civilization with unique churches, terrace agriculture, teff cultivation, and distinctive culture. The high-altitude environment shaped thousands of years of isolated development and remarkable resilience.
