Surviving Earth's Hottest Place

Danakil People

The Danakil (Afar subgroup) inhabit the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia and Eritrea, one of the hottest and most geologically active places on Earth. With temperatures regularly exceeding 50°C (122°F) and landscapes of active volcanoes, sulfur springs, and salt flats 125 meters below sea level, this is one of the most extreme human habitats. The Danakil have adapted to survive in this inhospitable environment through salt mining, camel caravans, and intimate knowledge of scarce water sources.
