Stilt Village Tsunami Zone Dwellers

Coastal Bajau People

Coastal Bajau communities (hundreds of thousands) inhabit stilt houses over coral reefs in the Coral Triangle—one of the world's most tsunami-prone and seismically active marine zones. They face constant tsunami threats, tropical cyclones, storm surges, and seismic sea waves. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated many Bajau villages. Living entirely over water, sophisticated knowledge of sea warning signs, and rapid boat escape traditions characterize adaptation to extreme marine hazards in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
